WHAT IS THE AQUATIC PHYSIOTHERAPY GROUP:
The Aquatic Physiotherapy Group (AQPG) is a special interest group (SIG) of The SASP established in 2009. The vision is to promote and develop a high standard of aquatic physiotherapy in South Africa, raise the profile of aquatic physiotherapy rehabilitation within the profession, and educate and facilitate access to other healthcare practitioners and the public.
Aquatic physiotherapy is a form of physiotherapy conducted mostly in a heated pool. In this form, the unique, beneficial physiological and physical properties of water are combined with the physiotherapist's knowledge and skill to provide rehabilitation.
Aquatic physiotherapy can be used as a medium in almost all patient populations:
- to decrease pain
- to improve the range of joint motion and flexibility of muscles
- to decrease muscle spasm and spasticity
- to increase muscle strength and endurance
- to improve circulation and reduce swelling
- to improve joint stability, balance and coordination
- to maintain and improve fitness
- in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
- in sport/dance cross-training
- in falls prevention
- to facilitate relaxation
- to promote a general feeling of wellbeing
