Do you wanna dance?

Balance leads to perfect form with less injury.

A South African researcher has analysed how ballerinas with different levels of skill maintain balance – which is key both to perfect dancing and avoiding injury. Physiotherapists play a critical role in helping women and men in the arts and in sports reach their goals without hurting.

Never give up, said Shane Warne…

…but what if playing cricket hurts?

Did you know that low back and lower limb injury are common among cricketers? And it’s hard to say who will experience this pain. Two South African physiotherapists have found a few of the standard tests done on cricketers are predictive of later pain. The most important benefit of pre-participatory screening is that it develops rapport between player and therapist.

Bodies are made to run and jump…

… doing it shouldn’t hurt.

Groin pain is a common experience among runners, cyclists, rugby players and cricketers. A group of physiotherapy researchers have found that sports people may show changes in how their hip and pelvis works during a landing – which helps them understand why the pain can be so bad and last so long.

Call your physiotherapist if you have groin pain – she or he can help you do your best!

If music be the food of love…

… playing it shouldn’t hurt.

An Australia-wide study published in 2014 showed that heavy demand for intense or increased playing resulted in “performance-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs)”. Physiotherapists were key to managing these demands, the study noted.

If rugby is your passion…

… playing it shouldn’t hurt.

The neck is perhaps the most vulnerable body part for rugby players – and the thought of injuring your neck is scary, isn’t it? Fortunately, a South African physiotherapist has developed a programme which strengthens the rugby-player’s neck and makes it more resilient.
